Director says “Acrid” got mixed reception in Iran, abroad

Tehran, June 27, IRNA – Director Kiarash Asadizadeh said on Friday that his latest film has received a mixed reception in its Iranian and world premiere.

“Acrid” depicts the inner feelings of different couples suffering from discordances to infidelity. It takes us from one character to another, young lovers or married couples, all of whom turn out to be linked, creating a closed circle between them where trust is at stake.

World premieres of the film recently took place simultaneously in Italy and Iran.

“This coincidence gave me the chance to have the reviews by Iranian and foreign filmgoers at the same time,” Asadizadeh told MNA.

“The film faced criticism from a number of Iranian audiences who said that I have generalized the women in ‘Acrid’ to other women in Iranian society,” he said.

“Other people viewed ‘Acrid’ as an anti-male film,” he added.

“With all due respect, I have never intended any prejudice against men in this film,” he stated.

Asadizadeh said that the Italian people have seen the subject of “Acrid” as “a universal issue.”

“They said that their views have been changed about Iranian women and their social status after watching Asghar Farhadi’s films and they classified ‘Acrid’ in category of Farhadi’s films,” he said.

In October 2013, “Acrid” was screened at the 8th Rome Film Festival, where it brought the Award for Emerging Actor or Actress to its entire cast.

Saber Abar, Pantea Panahiha and Shabnam Moqaddam are the main members of the cast.
